Chen Chu-Shan considered that Liu Ching was hardworking and cautious when he was alive and therefore bestowed three hundred pennies on him after his death, having Hsi Erh prepare some paper money and sacrifices to pay homage to Liu Ching. Hsi Erh knew that Liu Ching had no relatives to accompany him for the homage and thus peculated the money, figuring that no one would find out. To his surprise, a ghost demanded repayment of debt.
Never did Chen Chu-Shan believe in karma before he learned the news. He said in horror, “What Liu Ching said cannot be fabricated and is absolutely true. I once believed that one fears to be caught out when committing bad deeds and does as one please if no one is aware of. Not until now do I learn that having said that ghost is nonexistent is erroneous. As for those who commit shameful deeds under the table, I am concerned about them.”
